inspirational music for the medical student 1.5

Gaaaaaaaaaaah!!! I hate my website hosting place! My site keeps going down at the most inopportune times, like right when I’m pressing the “publish” button on my inspirational music post last night!!! And it stayed down, so my apologies for not having a post yesterday. Here it is now.

It’s time for another edition of inspirational music for the med student. My song of choice for today is: All American Rejects – Dirty Little Secret. Why you ask? Because we all have dirty little secrets that we hide from each other, patients, professors, and admissions committees! These secrets can be as harmless as the fact that we’re obsessed with Pokemon, as annoying as the fact that we’re closet gunners, or they can be downright ethically wrong such as cheating on exams (sorry, I know we all want to think that doctors are morally superior people, but the reality is that not all of them are). So here’s to dirty little secrets and the med students who have them!

By the way, the album that this song comes from is quite awesome too, much better than their previous album.

As always, feel free to submit song suggestions through the contact form.

  1. inspirational music for the medical student 1.1I don’t know about everyone else out there, but I simply love music. Always have. Maybe it has something to do with how INTPs don’t express emotions well, but music has always been an emotional outlet of sorts for me. Depending on my mood, I’ll pick a song or two and play them endlessly all day everyday until some new song(s) pique my fancy and the cycle begins anew. I’ve been so obsessed with certain bands that I’ve gone to their concerts days in a row if the cities are within driving distance. So that’s why I’m creating a (hopefully) weekly series of “inspirational music for the [role I’ve played]” posts in which I’ll be posting songs that have stuck with me through the different roles that I’ve taken on in my life. I’m kicking it off this week with “inspirational music for the med student” with a song that I used to listen to on the way to exams during my first two years of med school: Eminem – Lose Yourself. Now, I don’t at all normally listen to this type of music, let alone this particular artist. This song, however, is about the pressure of trying not to screw up the one chance for success, which is, quite frankly, what those pesky med school exams sometimes (and definitely the USMLE Step 1) feel like to the frazzled-no-amount-of-studying-is-ever-enough med student. We think to ourselves that we can’t screw up now that we’ve gotten this far. And that’s what this...
  2. inspirational music for the medical student 1.13So I've been just a tad negligent in my inspirational music posts for the last few weeks.  But not to fear.  The music is back. Med students work hard.  Really hard.  So it's only logical that for all that working hard, we party just as hard.  I would say we party even harder than we work.  I personally don't since I'm a big lame-o, but my classmates sure do.  And it just shocks me sometimes how wild we get.  Almost shameful, really.  But, hey, we deserve it.   In honor of our work hard, party hard ethic, my song for this week is the classic Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Want to Have Fun.  Because med students just want to have fun. Help prevent another lapse in my inspirational music series and submit song suggestions here....
  3. inspirational music for the medical student 1.7Remember your first time? No, not that first time. >_< Your first time seeing a patient, silly! Were you nervous? Scared you would screw up? Terrified that they would finally see you for the fraud that you are? I know I sure was and that I’ll probably still be for a long time to come. So here’s a song about being nervous and feeling like someone’s breathing down your neck just waiting for you to screw up: Jack’s Mannequin: Dark Blue*. I just discovered this band and think their stuff is great, so if you like this song, check out the rest of their album, Everything in Transit*. And I can’t forget to mention Carribean med student (I have a friend who goes to SGU!) rumorsweretrue’s* wonderful suggestion of Habib Koite & Bamada’s album, Ma Ya*. He particularly likes the track entitled Wassiye and I have to agree that I do too. Thanks for the suggestion! Are you a med student or know what it feels like to be one? Did you have certain songs that you listened to that helped you make it through the day? Then submit your suggestions through a comment on this post or an email to me at mylifemypace at gmail dot com.* *Okay, so wordpress or my host or somebody out there really hates me because I can't for the life of me add any links to this post without everything getting screwed up. Yes, that even means regular old ugly url addresses. And...
